2018-08-30
In the scheme of the August consultations, Minister of Education and Science Arayik Harutyunyan conducted the last of his regional deliberations in Ararat Province. Issues related to education in the Province of Ararat were discussed during the meeting. In his speech the Minister touched upon the problems of keeping politics out of schools, uniforms, fundraising, unified state exams, textbooks and educational programs. Referring to the proposed reforms, the Minister noted that starting from the next academic year, the admission of first-graders to schools would be done by electronic registration, and the choice of teachers would be held not by the parent's choice, but by draw. According to the Minister, this would allow avoiding the formation of so-called "elite" classes in schools. It is also intended to carry out competitive election of teachers by electronic registration as well as to make changes in the formation of school councils and a number of other questions.
Indicating the use of workbooks in schools, the Minister pointed out that the workbook was not obligatory and the teacher ought not demand students to have one. The representatives of the schools addressed numerous questions to Arayik Harutyunyan, beginning from the renovation of school building, funding matters, educational programs, graduation exams and other issues.
The Governor of Ararat Province Garik Sargsyan was also present at the consultation.
